Suicide rates increase highly among Israeli soldiers

Suicide rates have recently witnessed a more rapid increase among Israeli soldiers than in the few past years.

The famous Israeli magazine, Yediot Ahronot, revealed that the number of the Israeli soldiers who committed suicide has increased to an unprecedented level while the Israeli army forces are trying to implement new strategies so as to face the trouble.

The magazine added that 19 soldiers committed suicide in the first half of this year while 21 in the past year and 30 soldiers committed suicide in the previous decade. The number reached 35 in 2005.

The years of 2006 and 2007 testified a decrease in the suicide rate as those who committed suicide didn't exceed 24 which makes it more worrying for the Israelis.

These numbers have made a big fuss among the army who have prepared a series of programs to enable the army officers to deal with the unstable psychological situation and disturbances from which numerous soldiers suffer.

Yediot Ahronot illustrated that the army has taken a decision to reduce the number of soldiers and officers who are allowed to take their weapons back home.

Meanwhile, army sources said that intensive investigations were carried out revealed that most suicide incidents have nothing to do with their army service and that the number will most probably not stop at this level.

"the case has become very sensitive, and it will be monitored closely," An official source in the army stated. "we held many discussions concerning the issue, and every case was investigated solely and in light of its surrounding circumstances. We will keep working on this." the source added.
